Skyline and Solana Vista will be celebrating Red Ribbon Week from Monday October 28 to Friday Nov 1, 2024. As part of Red Ribbon Week, the PTA has arranged for a parent-only seminar on Tuesday October 29, 6:30-7:30 pm in the Skyline MPA, titled “Discover The Truth about Vaping and Youth Substance Use”. This presentation by the San Dieguito Alliance for Drug Free Youth will include samples of popular vaping devices for parents and guardians to see in-person.
In school that week, the children will be talking about making healthy choices without specifically discussing youth substance abuse, but the history behind Red Ribbon week is important to understand.
Red Ribbon Week was started by the friends and family of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was working undercover in Mexico in 1985 and was murdered by members of the drug cartel he was investigating. His family lives in the San Diego area and one of his children is a judge in south county. They started Red Ribbon Week to honor his memory and work. The website describes it this way: “The Red Ribbon Campaign is dedicated to helping preserve Special Agent Camarena’s memory and further the cause for which he gave his life: the fight against the violence of drug crime and the misery of addiction. By gathering together in special events and wearing red ribbons during the last week in October, Americans from all walks of life demonstrate their opposition to drugs.”
